Anesthesia

After effects of sub conscious memory

11/05/2008

Question:

Hi. I had a general anesthetic for D& C and polyp removal from my unterus. Some days later I experienced uncontrolled rage and sub conscious memories and feelings from childhood sexual abuse which I experienced during my younger years. Can anesthetic evoke sub conscious feelings after surgery? I am currently having counselling with this. Prior to the surgery I was a person very much in control of everything. Your thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:

I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time after your surgery. I am not in the mental health field but I think one can readily appreciate that the kind of operation you've had is more likely to be responsible for the troubling psychological reaction than any possible lingering effects of short-acting anesthesia.
