My 17 year old son has Crohn`s Disease. His disease tends to be concentrated in the rectal area ie abscess/fissures. Becasue his past abscess was drained and f/u I and D and resulted in a long painful road to recovery when he was 13, his GI MD has recommended no surgery for current small abscess and attempting to heal with medical mgnt ie antibiotics/Remicade. What is a reasonable time to wait? I don`t want him to have any more pain that he already has, and yet this has been going on for 2 months. Thank you.
It is very reasonable to give the biologic therapy time to work, This is effective in a significant percentage of patients with anal Crohn's disease. This is a difficult problem to treat, since it is important not to injure the anal sphincter- so medical therapy has an important role.
