Children's Health

Constipated

01/07/2009

Question:

My son is 4 months old, is about a month that my son does not poo, we have give him prune, apple juice juice and that does not help him. I also try the thermometer in his rectum. My wife breast feed him. The funny thing my son is not unhappy. What can we do.

Answer:

Breast fed infants may only have a bowel movement every 3 to 7 days. Many infants can take advantage of so much of the goodness of the breast milk that there is very little waste to get rid of in their poo. Children who are constipated are passing hard, pebble-like poo. This is usually associated with severe straining. If your child is happy, growing, and feeding well constipation is probably not an issue. Please review this concern with your pediatric healthcare provider at your next check-up.
