Dark gums

12/29/2008

Question:

what does it mean if I have dark gums. I am 11 years old and have had several teeth with metal caps?

Answer:

I cannot tell whether you have dark gums only around metal caps or everywhere. If you are African American or Indian, it is normal to have darker gums and whiter teeth compared with Caucasians.  Dark gums may be caused by metal caps too (metal color showing through the gums). If you are only 11 years old, these caps need to be replaced from time to time as your face grows and a dentist needs to check the health of your gums.
