Hemochromatosis

Hemachromatosis

01/09/2009

Question:

My iron level was checked with a result of 186. I am a 51 year old caucasion female (postmenapausal). Should I be concerned about hemachromatosis? My great aunt had some sort of condition which required blood letting, but I am unsure of her diagnosis. Thank-You

Answer:

Your iron level is up a little bit, but it is not diagnostic in and of itself.  Given your family history, there is a little suggestion of possible hemochromatosis.  It's probably worth your while to proceed at least with the ferritin and consideration of genetic testing.

If you live close to Columbus, Ohio and we can help, we would be happy to take a referral.   You may contact Daphne Lockett at 614-293-9441.
