Urinary and Genital Disorders (Children)

WBC + But Urine Culture Test is Always Normal

01/15/2009

Question:

For over half year my daught had urine test every 3-4 weeks. Every time WBC was found (most one + but sometimes two +)but at the same time urine culture was normal. She has no symptom at all only I noticed her unrine smells sometimes. Could this a problem? Do you suggest any further test?

Thanks a lot.

Answer:

Most probably it is not indicative of a significant problem. However, it depends on the microscopic analysis of the urine sample. If there are a significant number of white blood cells which might suggest chronic inflammation, then a renal and bladder ultrasound would be a good idea. This study might reveal a minor abnormality of the urinary tract with evidence of previous infection, but the likelihood is low, given the absence of any symptoms.
