Pulmonary Fibrosis

Does ever having pneumonia lead to this?

01/11/2009

Question:

my sister has recently been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis while been treated for pneumonia. there are days when she seems to be getting well and then out of nowhere she gets sicker. the tests shows no improvement is this normal? this is the first time my family has heard of this disease. i am reading and trying to gather information. i had pneumonia in 2004 does this mean i can also develop this? does ever having pneumonia cause this?

Answer:

Pneumonia does not cause idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The causes of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are unknown; however, it appears that in about 10-15% of patients, it can be inherited. Patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis can have an up-and-down course but overall, the disease gets steadily worse over time. There is no known cure.
