Relapse of MG
WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR A RELAPSE OF MG? i HAD A THYMECTOMY APPROX 8 YRS AGO, A YEAR LATER I WENT INTO REMISSION AND HAVE BEEN FINE SINCE. COULD A SEVERE TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE BE A CAUSE? THANK-YOU
Myasthenia gravis can relapse from a remission for a variety of reasons, including high stress levels, concurrent medical illness (pneumonia, kidney failure, etc), and certain medications. These acute stresses on the body can increase the overall immune system and there can be a flare of the disease secondary to this. Your chances of relapse with the thymectomy are much lower of having a relapse, but it is still possible.
