Lung diseases

Bronchitis

04/07/2009

Question:

I had a cough and my doctor gave me antibiotics. The cough contiued on and now 3 months later I still have a cough and my doctor gave me Biaxan and told me that I had bronchitis. Would this be considered acute or chronic bronchitis?

Answer:

The cough is chronic but it is not necessarily bronchitis. At this point, many physicians will do a chest x-ray to be sure there is no serious lung problems (such as TB, cancer, abscess, etc.). Other common causes of chronic cough include sinusitis, esophageal reflux, and asthma. You should ask your physician if any of these are possible.
