Fasting blood sugar higher than post prandial

04/27/2009

Question:

Respected Sir,

Why my fasting blood sugar is around 110 to 115 which according to parameers should b below 100. Whereas my post prandia is weill within 90-95. In other words, why fasting is higher than pos prandial. I seek your guidance Sir !

Answer:

I don't have enough information to answer your question adequately but in brief a lower post than pre-meal sugar can be observed in both people with and without diabetes, depending on the timing of sampling, the composition of the meal, antecedent activity and stress and, in the case of people with diabetes, the nature, timing and time course of action of any diabetes medications.  In people with diabetes, it may mean the medications need to be adjusted - depending on whether the values observed have any acute health consequence.
