Skin Cancer

Brown Spot on Lower leg

05/08/2009

Question:

I have a about 3/8 inch brown spot on my lower leg, not raised but perfectly smooth. If I scratch the brown spot the brown pigment goes away but returns in a day or so. I feel this spot has been present for over a year or more. Is this a cause for concern?

Answer:

The brown color that you are describing is suggestive of melanin in the spot. Melanin is found in a number of pigmented skin lesions such as birthmarks, nevi or moles, etc. However, your description of the brown going away after scratching is rather unusual. It is probably best to get it checked and examined by a skin specialist.
