Hemochromatosis

Liver biopsy and iron

06/18/2009

Question:

I recently had a liver biopsy done that revealed HEMOSIDERIN deposition of grade 1+2+4+. Is this the same as hemochromatosis? what is the treatment for such a condition? I have T2 diabetis...could this be from the iron?

Answer:

Actually, hemosiderin is distinct and different from what you would see with hemochromatosis. Usually, when you have increased hemosiderin deposits in the liver, this is related to underlying inflammation. You need to talk with your primary care doctor to find out what it is they did a liver biopsy for.
