Pneumonia and bronchitis07/07/2009 |
I have both pneumonia and bronchitis the same time. I had to go on the second round of antibiotics. How comman is it two have both at the same time?
Bronchitis is an inflammation or infection of the bronchi (airways) in the lung. It usually caused by a virus and thus does not require antibiotics. Bronchitis can sometime progress or predispose to pneumonia (infection of the alveoli (airsacs)). It is frequently caused by bacteria, therefore we do treat this with antibiotics. It is not that unusual for a bad bronchitis to progress to pneumonia.
