Lung diseases

Lung fluid

I had the flu in February 2009 and the doctor said I had fluid buildup in my lungs. I took Advair hoping to stop the pain and tightness, but it still feels the same. I had a chest x-ray and they could find nothing. What can this be?

It would be very unusual to have an residual lung disease from influenza 6 months later. Some patients can develop asthma following viral respiratory infections but they tend to get better with medications such as Advair. If your are still having chest pain, then speak with your physician about whether a pulmonary consultation, pulmonary function tests, or a chest CT are needed. Chest pain and tightness can be due to be lung and heart disease so if your have risk factors for heart disease (family history, age over 50, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.), then a stress test may be necessary to determine if the tightness is due to heart disease.
