Huntington's Disease

How long?

07/13/2009

Question:

He found out he had huningtons about 5 years ago. He is in his 50`s. 3 out of 4 siblings have already died from this. How long on average do they live after symptoms have started. he is healty and active on a daily basis

Answer:

It is not clear from the question whether he has symptoms yet. There is no definite answer to the question. In the past, the average life expectancy after symptom onset was about 20-25 years. However, we are learning more about Huntington's disease every day.

Several agents are under study right now that delay symptoms and prolong life in animal models of Huntington's disease. Several of these agents are currently in clinical trials in individuals with HD and we are optimistic that we will soon have interventions that delay disease progression. Regular exercise may also help delay symptom progression.
