Low grade fever

07/30/2009

Question:

My 9 year old daughter has had a low grade temp for 2 1/2 days what should I do? Her doctor said as long as it did not go over 102 she should be ok. Is that true?

Answer:

Thank you very much for the question. In this age range, the most common cause of a fever is an infection. The infection could be caused by a virus or bacterium. With the information that you have shared, it is difficult to determine the actual cause of the fever. Given your concern, I suggest that you appointment to see your child's primary care provider so she can be evaluated. Your child's primary care provider will likely ask about the presence or absence of sore throat, cough, runny nose, vomiting / diarrhea, painful urination, rashes and potential ill contacts. Thank you very much for the question.
