Red Ring Around Iris of Newborn08/06/2009 |
Upon arriving home with our newborn son, we noticed a red ring around his iris of his left eye. Otherwise his eyes and over all health seem normal. Is this problem uncommon in newborns?
This may be difficult to determine over the internet. A description of a red ring is not something we commonly encounter. I am thinking that it might be a prominent iris blood vessel and these sometimes can appear red on or near the iris. If you are unsure or it looks suspicious, my best advice would be to seek the opinion of an eye doctor.
Infants from 6 months - 1 year old are eligible for examinations at no charge due to a program called InfantSEE. Just look for InfantSEE providers and you should easily be able to locate an optometrist near you.
