Substance Abuse

02/04/2010

Question:

what is the most prevalent substance abuse what drug is on the rise

Answer:

Prescription opiate drug abuse is on the rise, especially the use of prescription pain relievers. Abuse often begins during adolescence.

For the teen abusing opiates, progression to heroin is just a matter of time and circumstance. Heroin is cheap and readily available. The fashion industry has popularized the chic heroin look with pale skin, jutting bones and dark circles underneath the eyes. With improved methods of extraction, purity levels are higher today, contributing to a surge in opiate related deaths. With repeated use, more and more of the drug is needed to achieve the desire effect. Tolerance develops. Prescriptions run out and the individual looks to street trafficking where there is an abundant supply of the drug. In 2009, Franklin county had over a 400% increase in opiate related deaths.

Marijuana is the most prevalent illegal drug abused.
