Risk of Kidney Cysts From Lithotripsy

12/22/2009

Question:

I was wandering since I have a 1 inch cyst in the lateral aspect of one of my kidneys should I have lithrotripsy for a 6mm stone in the other kidney regarding developing another cyst on that kidney? What is the risk of developing a kidney cyst from lithrotripsy?

Answer:

A simple cyst of the kidney is a common finding and generally presents no symptoms and is rarely a problem. More common complications from lithotripsy including, perinephric hematoma, flank skin bruising, blood in the urine and occasional hypertension. You should discuss these matters with your physician and discuss the benefits versus the risks of proceeding with lithotripsy.
