Implanon

11/11/2009

Question:

My daughter (19 yrs old) had implanon implanted in Nov 2008 after the birth of her son. She has never had a period until now. She has been bleeding for 7 days and it is very very heavy. She feels very weak, has no energy, has no appetite and is nauseous. Is this normal for implanon? Should she be bleeding like this?

Answer:

Irregular bleeding is common with Implanon. However, heavy bleeding is uncommon. If she is soaking through a full-sized pad every hour to two and this goes on for more than a day, she needs to be seen by a health care professional.

If the bleeding slows, but she has persistent menstrual-like bleeding, that is expected on Implanon.
