Pain after ACL surgery

12/21/2009

Question:

I am 8mos. post op from acl reconstuction..I went down during a Basketball game with my acl brace on..few days later I have a sharp pain at incision site when i walk or have pressure on it. Can the screw that was in place now be loose and poking somethin?

Answer:

After 8 months, it would be unlikely for screw fixation to loosen. If this actually happened, I would expect there to have been bleeding into your knee joint, which means your knee would have swollen considerably and immediately following this injury. Since you were wearing your ACL brace, assuming this fits you well, this would have reduced - although not eliminated - the possibility of injuring your reconstructed ACL.

Sharp pain after an injury could be due to any number of alternative causes. If your symptoms persist, and particularly if they interfere with function, you should follow up with your orthopedist.
