Severe edema in both legs01/22/2010 |
My Mom is 80 years of age and has edema of both legs most of her life. However as of late this condition has worsened and is causing her some distress. She has been treated with medications to decrease fluid retention but it is not working. She has been given a clean bill of health for both her heart and lungs. She is unable to use compression stockings because the legs are too swollen. Are their any other treatments is surgery an option. Thanks!
I would recommend starting off with an ACE wrap beginning at the foot and wrapping to the knee. After 24 hours of compression, you should be able to restart the compression stockings. A visit to her physician and a possible venous ultrasound and look at her venous valves in the legs may also help. Take care!
