Light Periods Lasting for More Than 2 Weeks

02/18/2010

Question:

My period started on the 1st week of Jan only for a day and after a several days, I started having period for a day and till today, the 25th of Jan. I have been spotting very light. I am a bit concerned. I don`t use any contraceptive pills. I am not sexually active. Please help me.

Answer:

There are many causes for an irregular menstrual cycle. The most common causes are pregnancy and contraceptives as you mentioned. However, your cycle can become lighter if you are under a lot of stress, change weight rapidly (weight gain or loss), have an under active thyroid or have premature menopause due to changes in hormone levels.

You should see your doctor to have a test done to check your thyroid. Most of the time the menstrual cycle will correct itself in the following month. If it continues to happen, then you may need to have your hormone levels checked.
