Urinary Disorders

Increased Urgency When Standing Up

02/08/2010

Question:

I urinate quite frequently these days (maybe having passed 65 has something to do with it), but find that I often have an increased need to urinate when standing up after having been seated for some time, such as getting up from work at a desk or some other seated activity.

I don`t understand why. Is there something about standing up that increases urinary urgency? And while I`m not sure there`s anything to do about this, maybe you have some ideas. Thanks for your guidance.

Answer:

You may have an overactive bladder. Standing from a sitting position may lead to some urgency. This can result from an enlarged prostate in a man or can be for a variety of reasons in both men and women. It would be worth discussing this with your doctor, being examined and having your urine checked. There are medications, exercises, and sometimes surgeries that can help these symptoms.
