Pulmonary Fibrosis

Serracor NK for Pulmonary Fibrosis

02/12/2010

Question:

Have you heard of Serracor-nk for helping pulmonary fibrosis?

Answer:

Serracor-NK is a nutritional supplement. Since it is sold as a supplement and not as a medication, claims about its effects in people are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Many of these manufacturers will make claims about the the medicinal properties of these supplements. Since the FDA does not regulate nutritional supplements, these claims are frequently not based on any scientific data. Patients with otherwise incurable diseases (such as pulmonary fibrosis) are particularly vulnerable because when there are no medications that can cure their conditions, they often turn to any treatment that offers them hope.

Most nutritional supplements such as this one will have some disclaimer on their websites or advertisements to the effect of: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any diseases". I recommend avoiding any such treatments that have not been tested in clinical trials as there is no way to know if they make pulmonary fibrosis better, make it worse, or do nothing. The only thing that is certain is that the sale of these supplements profits their manufacturers at the expense of those persons whom they prey on.

There is one nutritional supplement (that is also sold by prescription as a medication) that has been tested in clinical trials, N-acetylcysteine, that does appear promising. It is currently undergoing a large randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
