Urinary Disorders

Cloudy Urine

05/27/2010

Question:

My urine is usually cloudy and is yellow. It seems like I can drink a lot of water and it won`t ever be completly clear. I am a 19 year old male. Every now and then I have a slight pain in my kidneys, too. Is this normal? It has been really worrying me.

Answer:

While urine color can range from almost clear to what might be called a dark amber depending on how concentrated it is (how much liquids you drink) it should never be cloudy and you should not have pain in your back or area of the kidneys. Your provider should minimally test the urine for infection or abnormal cells. If anything is abnormal it should be treated and may even require further testing, usually an X-ray.
