What to Do After You Know You Have Gallstones

04/14/2010

Question:

I have been looking for information on what to do if you have gallstones, and everything seems to be directed at how to prevent gallstones and after you have surgery. Is there any possibility of dissolving or passing these stones naturally? Or is it too late if you have them already? I have seen home remedies of drinking olive oil and lemon juice, or epsom salts. Do these have any merit?

Answer:

Most of the time, those remedies will not work. Some physicians try a medication called ursodial but I have never seen it work. Only way to definitively rid yourselves of stones is to have surgery to remove your gallbladder.
