Laxative for Small Children

05/12/2010

Question:

Hi Pharmacist,

Children of what age can use Microlax baby suppository? I consult the package insert but there is no age specification in there.

Answer:

No information regarding Microlax suppositories was found.  Microlax enema, a liquid form of laxative also inserted into the rectum, is available.   The package insert provides directions for use in children under 3 years of age.

For a child younger than 12 months, glycerin suppositories for infants may be useful.  Use half of the suppository by cutting it lengthwise.
Talk with your doctor first regarding the best treatment for constipation in your child.
