Punctate Lung Nodules

04/26/2010

Question:

I am a 37 yr old female who was diagnosed with sarcoid 7 yrs ago. On my last ct scan my nodules were 5mm. i recently had a new scan and the 2 nodules measure 15mm. Should I be concerned?

Answer:

Dear Madam- It is not uncommon for sarcoidosis to cause small nodules in the lungs. Larger nodules, as you describe, are also common and may be a sign of increased disease activity.

If the nodules continue to grow despite adequate treatment for the sarcoidosis, it may be necessary to perform further testing to make sure they are not something more serious. Thus, it is necessary to follow these nodules over time and under the supervision of your doctors.
