Superbug

11/19/2010

Question:

What can you tell me about this superbug that is going around this year. I am taking immunsurpression for my ra and wondering am I at a higher risk? Any vaccines yet for this bug? What are the symptoms?

Answer:

I presume you are referring to the multidrug resistant strains of a bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae (one type that is now circulating worldwide and originated in New Delhi). Though at risk for a variety of infections because of the treatment of your RA, these bacterial infections are most often acquired during a hospitalization. As long as you do not require hospital admission, your risk is very low.
