Has my bite plane changed?

10/26/2010

Question:

For the past two to three months I have been using a night guard, which was made by an orthodontist. Now my jaw is popping all the time. The left side pops more than the right. A woman who works for an orthodontist said that my bite plane might be changing. It is really hard to get an appointment with my dentist, so I would just like to know if this sounds like something I should be worried about. Thanks.

Answer:

Your bite plane is not changing, but it may not be adjusted correctly to your new occlusion. Call your dentist that made the bite plane and tell the staff what you have told me. They should get you an appointment quickly as it is possible that permanent damage can occur with long-term clicking and popping.
