Digestive Disorders

Use of veg. laxative

11/17/2010

Question:

I have been using a veg. lax daily for the past 5 or 6 years because of a medication I was using. How can I stop this and get my bowels back to a normal daily movement or have I caused permanent damage to my bowels?

Answer:

That is a difficult one. Most laxatives do eventually cause a "lazy bowel". I would increase fiber in your diet slowly as you wean yourself off the laxatives. I find Miralax to be a better alternative to other laxatives if you need something.
