Red Spot of Blood on White of Eye11/30/2010 |
I have a circle of red blood on the white of my eye below the pupil of my left eye. What caused this & is it serious?
A red spot on the white part of the eye may be an indication that some of the superficial vessels of the eye are leaking blood. This is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage and is usually a result of heavy straining, coughing, or sneezing. The redness usually resolves on its own within a few weeks.
However, if your eye redness is associated with any pain, discharge or decrease in vision, these are signs of possible infection or inflammation. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, or if the redness persists, I advise you schedule an appointment with an eye doctor for further evaluation.
