Kidney Diseases

Creatinine Level

12/08/2010

Question:

My mother has been on meropenem for the past 8 weeks to treat an intra abdominal abscess. All throughout her weekly blood draws, her BUN has been in the normal range between 12 - 20 and her creatinine has been low, usually between 0.47 and 0.54. All of the sudden, this week her creatinine level jumped to 1.19 but her BUN stayed in the normal range. Is there something that could cause this much of an increase in a week? The only thing that is different is that an interventional radiologist drained her abscess and the drain was removed. The lab test results stayed consisted after the drain was installed and just increased after the drain was removed. Her doctor just reduced the amount of daily meropenem but did not order another blood test. Thank you for your help.

Answer:

Your mother has acute kidney failure with increase in creatinine from .5 to 1.19. This increase in creatinine could be due to variety of reasons- eg low on fluids (dehydration), side effect of medications or secondary to chronic infection. She should be seen by a kidney specialist to sort this out.
