Flomax Used for Children01/20/2011 |
My 11 year old daughter has a kidney stone this is #2. the er doctor prescribed flomax to help her reduce inflamation in the bladder to help her pass the stone. Is this safe?
Yes--Flomax has been used safely in children, although it is not FDA-approved. It seems to increase the likelihood that the ureteral stone will pass, assuming it is small (< 5 mm), and in the lower ureter, near the bladder. If this is her second urinary stone, she should undergo a metabolic evaluation to determine why she is getting kidney stones. Also, she should strain her urine, and if the stone is retrieved, it should be submitted for stone analysis.
