Kidney Pain

02/24/2011

Question:

I waas in Mexico over the xmas holiday and ate some broiled fish that made me sick--diarrhea, vomiting, fever. I was Ok after 3-4 days, but have had occasional loose stools since. In addition, I have been experiencing a dull aching pain in the area of my right kidney. The level of discomfort has increased over the last week to 10-days. Could I have a pathogen that is effecting the kidney? or are these unrelated?

Answer:

There are afflictions of the kidney that are associated with a diarrheal illness. The presence of pain in the flank does not necessarily mean that the kidneys are afflicted. You would need to have a urinalysis and blood tests, along with a physical exam to determine the cause of your flank pain. I would go to see your family doctor.
