Swelling/Pain after Achilles Tendon Surgery02/15/2011 |
My father had a surgery after a rupture in his Achilles tendon. He casted his leg for 6 weeks. After removing the cast, he started the first session of physiotherapy. However, he started facing swelling and pain in his foot just after this session. Can you please explain the causes of this pain/swelling and the ways to deal with it?Thank you.
Swelling and pain could result from the fact there is no longer any compression from a cast, and/or due to inflammation resulting from the attempt to regain function (flexibility and strength) of this recently injured and weakened area, and/or the development of a blood clot (which is hopefully not the case). If he hasn't already done so, your father should see his physician again as soon as possible for an assessment and recommendations specific to his needs.
