Drug Interactions02/15/2011 |
I am taking Mirapex ER 3 mg. and Stalevo 150 tab. for PD . Can I take a cough suppressant ( Dextromethorphan hydrobromide ) or an Expectorant ( Guaifenesin ) ? What are the interactions for these meds , taken together ? If not what otc meds are safe to take for a cold ?
Both dextromethorphan and guaifenesin are safe to take with your other Parkinson's medications. Guaifenesin has few, if any, drug interactions. Dextromethorphan can increase the risk of too much serotonin with some antidepressant medications, but it is safe with your Parkinson’s medications. There is a slight risk of increased heart rate or heart rhythm changes with decongestant medications. I suggest avoiding products with pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine unless you’ve spoken to your physician first.
