Tiny Pleural Based Nodule

03/22/2011

Question:

I have been having right sided flank pain for several years with no dx. Had a CT done and it showed a tiny pleural based nodule. I am 35 years old. Non smoker. What does this mean, and should I be concerned? Please help. Everyone acts like this is no big deal, and it worries me that it could become cancer later in life.

Answer:

These tiny nodules are very common in this area of the country. They are usually due to granulomas - which are a small nodule from a fungus we all breathe in. These nodules are of no consequence to your health. However, these nodules need to be followed to make sure they don't grow. Usually if there is no change for 2 years, no further follow up is needed. They won't turn into cancer later.

I hope this helps.
