Newborn and Infant Care

Is baby having BM to often?

12/08/1997

Question:

Babygirl is 2mo's. Very happy and content. However, she has a "poopy" diaper almost every change. She is fed on demand, usually every 2-3 hrs. And sometimes in between. My ? Is should she be having a bm that often? Mostly it is yellow, then went to a pea green, and now yellow again.

Answer:

Babies who are exclusively breastfed often have frequent bowel movements. As they get older they may decrease the number of bowel movements; in fact some breastfed infants will have a bowel movement only once a week without signs of constipation. Normally the stool of an exclusively breastfed infant is yellow to yellow-green or tan. An occasional green stool is normal. However, if your daughter is regularly having green stools you need to consult with your health care provider.
