Newborn and Infant Care

Prenatal vitamins while nursing

08/26/1998

Question:

I know that while breastfeeding I have to be extremely careful about any meds that I take for headaches, etc and about how to take them -- my doctor reccommends taking the medication right after a feeding and then waiting a certain number of hours before another feeding. But what about prenatal vitamins? Is it OK to take a prenatal vitamin and then breastfeed immediately or soon thereafter?

Answer:

Vitamin levels in breast milk are relatively constant, even with ingestion of prenatal vitamins. So it is OK to take your prenatal vitamin and nurse your child immediately, or anytime.
