Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Pycnogenol

04/21/1999

Question:

I am an adult with attention deficit disorder. I Would like to know if Pycnogenol is an effective treatment for this diagnosis?

Answer:

VIA SCIENTIFIC METHOD: I have not yet seen any studies that would really strongly suggest "yes" or "no". I have seen no major problems with taking it nor have I read about any, but that is not to say it has been proven safe. Unfortunately, the main studies on anything medical are almost always done with the drugs that pharmaceutical companies want to promote---they, most often, are the ones who pay for such studies. VIA ANECDOTES: I have had patients with ADD who insist Pycnogenol does help, although they usually have felt it decreased efficacy within a few weeks or months. And even they felt it was nowhere near as helpful for thought processing as Ritalin, Dexadrine or Adderall. Thanks for your question!
